The task of writing strains the mind and challenges the will. For many, writing a blog post or a letter evokes the type of fear from term papers to book essay we have long tried to forget. Writing is creating. The task can become a joy, but it requires wisdom and work. Here are four ideas to write well.
- Make a Writing Schedule. Many know their own limitations. If my iPhone does not alert me to an appointment, I am likely to miss it. So, why not apply the same diligence to writing? Schedule a 30-minute time block at least twice a week to write a manageable piece for your website or your social media accounts. Writing is work, so approach it with scheduled diligence.
- Limit Your Distractions. As children of the internet, most of us compete with goldfish for attention spans. Writing well requires focus. Don’t start your race limping or with shoes tied. Limit distractions. Turn off the cell-phone. Turn off the internet on your computer. Turn off any device that can notify you. Schedule distraction-free time to write. Put on the headphones, play some Piano Guys, and get to work.
- Use Pen and Paper. When staring at a blank screen yields nothing but a headache, change your environment and your approach. Take a pen and pad of paper outside and allow yourself time to sit and to think. What do you have to say that is worth saying? Write out whatever comes to mind. Now you have something to start with. You’ll be surprised how helpful this exercise can be.
- Reward Accomplishments. Did you sit and complete some writing task? Allow yourself some healthy reward. Perhaps you go for a walk or a bike ride. The bigger the accomplishment, the bigger the reward. This is especially important when your writing project takes you away from family and friends for an extended period of time. Plan a family vacation after the new website is fully launched. Then, relax. You earned it and you need it.
