Recently, the Bizwrite team had the fascinating experience of writing for our friends at Charley’s Chicks, a local poultry and backyard chicken farm in North Florida. This farm raises over 50 breeds of poultry and supplies local restaurants, farmer’s markets, and the backyard chicken community in the area.
As with all our clients, we did our research on Charley’s Chicks to learn the do’s, don’ts, and poults of their operation so that we could compose content for them. We figured we might as well write about our experience working with Charley’s Chicks! Here are a few things we learned on our journey.
Doing the Homework
Perhaps the most crucial step in any project we create is the research we conduct before the writing begins. As a content writing agency, we have a responsibility to present information authoritatively and accurately. We do extensive research on every piece of content we create to provide industry-specific, well-proven information for our clients’ websites, social media posts, blogs, email newsletters, internal communications, etc.
Identifying Tone and Voice
Every brand has a unique tone and voice with which they communicate to their clients and potential business relations. A key aspect of copywriting for businesses is identifying the specific personality of an organization to represent them in our writing.
When we created content for Charley’s Chicks, we first spoke with the godfather of backyard chickens himself, Charlie. Charlie is a wealth of knowledge, as well as a larger than life character, so we wanted to incorporate his personality into the brand’s voice and tone.
From there, we conducted research on the available material on their website and social media to perfectly match their tone and brand image. This process is always a tricky part of business copywriting because every organization has a specific way they present themselves in their content.
The brand persona that Charlie’s Chicks presents is an exciting mix of relaxed and homegrown, yet experts in their field. Matching their tone and voice involved striking a balance between laid-back and insightful. Our team of writers created, reworked, and scratched entire projects before finding the perfect balance for Charley’s Chicks.
Learning All About Chickens
In addition to matching their brand image, our writers also had to learn a lot about backyard chickens and poultry. In spite of having a reputation for being simple creatures, chickens can be complicated to raise in a backyard setting. For example, did you know that if chickens’ water is moved or the water dispenser is replaced, chickens may die of thirst because they don’t adapt to change very well? Our team learned this and more fun fowl facts as we read Pastured Poultry: Feeding and Management by Jeff Mattocks, watched videos, and scoured the internet for hen-formation.
Learning about backyard chickens and the other niche topics we’ve written on is one of the joys of our content writing agency. Our team firmly believes in the lifelong pursuit of knowledge. Writing about organizations like Charley’s Chicks helps us with that ambition.
Types of Content
Naturally, there’s a wide variety of content we can create for businesses. Every piece of content is slightly different, and the platform plays into how we write, the length of the material, and the depth of detail we provide. As a content writing agency, Bizwrite has developed essential skills in adapting our writing to fit each type of content and its platform.
For Charley’s Chicks, we’ve written website material, blog posts, social media posts, and other various pieces of content. Most recently, we created a series of social media posts designed to inform backyard chicken owners of some tips and tricks for their chicks. While utilizing strategic SEO keywords and industry-specific terminology, we crafted short and sweet social posts to engage and delight their audience.
Getting Feedback
An important part of our journey was receiving our client’s feedback. The folks at Charley’s Chicks were prompt to provide insight and suggest edits. Getting strategic feedback from our clients is an invaluable component of our copywriting. When a client is quick to respond with their adjustments, it helps us understand their audience and brand more completely.
As intimidating as it can be to have your work looked over with a microscope, it’s crucial to copywriting. We leave any hubris at the door when we create content so that, in the end, the product is exactly what our clients envision and truly tells their story. That’s why we say, “At Bizwrite, it’s your story, well said.”
Edits and Revisions
Once we received feedback from our clients, we began editing and revising immediately. Within a few hours of first submitting the social media posts, we received feedback, revised, and resubmitted them to our backyard poultry clients.
The editing process is an excellent time to revisit the content as a whole. When we edit content for our clients, we don’t just look at their specific notes but look at the material as a whole. After we thoroughly grasp what our clients want, we can reassess and reevaluate each section for cohesiveness, SEO elements, and readability. This final assessment is critical to creating well-written, strategic content for businesses.
We double and triple-check our work to ensure it is nothing but the highest quality—no raw copy here. That’s the professional difference, and something we pride ourselves on at Bizwrite.
Final Submission
After we edited and re-edited the social media posts for Charley’s Chicks, it was time to submit the final product. When our clients received their content, it was farm-fresh and ready to post. At that point, the team at Charlie’s Chicks could use the material as they saw fit. By the time a piece of content is in the client’s hands, it’s been thoroughly edited, fact-checked, and revised with the utmost scrutiny.
Final Clucks
After writing several pieces for Charlie’s Chicks, our team has learned much about the science of raising backyard chickens. In fact, a few team members have been inspired to start a backyard brood of their own.
