How to Write Product Descriptions

Writing product descriptions can be challenging if you don’t have any experience with the industry. In this Bizwrite spotlight, we’ll cover the basics for creating solid product descriptions for e-commerce writing. Protections are in place for consumers accessing the e-commerce market and Bizwrite is keenly aware that product descriptions are to be within these guidelines. Bizwrite’s three step process:

1. Do your homework

Know the products and the market that drives them. Researching the manufacturer and what they offer is essential for solid product description and presenting verifiable facts regarding the product. Bizwrite does its homework to examine a product so that our descriptions are eye-catching, marketable and thorough.

To do so successfully, we will go to the manufacturer’s and/or the parent company’s website to find what makes the product unique and then create copy that truly highlights the product’s strengths. As a producer, you want your product to be at the top of the consumer’s list of must-haves and Bizwrite works to get you there.

2. Demonstrate Value

In any product description, you can’t lead the consumer to believe that they’re going to get something that they are not. Products should be presented with descriptions that consider what consumers are looking for like what it is made of, what is the purpose for which it can be used, and the value attached to the product.

It is vital that the writer give an accurate description while striving to catch the reader’s attention and make them want to purchase the product. However, even in the market-driven consumer, one wants to feel that they got what they expected. Keeping consumers coming back for more is essential for the e-commerce business and realistic representation of the product will accomplish that.

3. Stick to the facts

Product descriptions are not the medium in which to start your first novel. Bizwrite is keenly aware that manufacturer’s want accurate and eye-catching words to best market their products. It is essential to present a product’s details that lead a consumer to want to purchase because it is just what they are looking for.

Equally important is to be concise. Say enough to fully describe the product and its unique details, but don’t ramble. People are used to getting information quickly and easily and won’t read a lot of copy. Grab their attention in the first sentence and keep it through the entire description and consumers are more likely to hit “Add to cart.”
