How to Capitalize on Valentine’s Day in Content Marketing

It’s the season of Love. The smell of roses and chocolate candies is in the air, along with an unbelievable amount of Valentine’s Day content. It seems everybody with a blog takes the month of February to write about their favorite Valentine’s Day recipes, traditions, fun date ideas, or ways to celebrate February 14th.

While a holiday dedicated to affection and ways to show how much you care about others certainly provides a number of opportunities for content marketers, not all Valentine’s Day content is the same. Amidst the lists of Valentine-related content, we thought we’d cover a few rules for holiday content marketing. We’ll cover the dos and don’ts of creating holiday content.

Why Make Holiday Content?

With everyone and their mother making Valentine’s Day material, why bother adding your voice to the heart-shaped noise? Naturally, with retailers and e-commerces sites pouring billions into February 14th material, there must be something to this conglomerate of pink and red.

The day dedicated to love is more than just a day for expressing affection; it is also a golden opportunity for businesses to broaden their reach and engage audience members for the holiday influx. Content marketers can take advantage of the additional traffic and draw more people in to create conversions as people look for the perfect gift for that special someone.

Although countless other companies are trying to snag an audience’s attention, you can set yourself apart from the crowd by following a few simple rules. Let’s discuss a few of the do’s and don’ts of Valentine’s Day content marketing.

The Don’ts

Let’s begin with what to avoid:

  1. Doing the same thing everyone else: Everyone will be writing about fun date ideas, the best Valentine’s Day cakes, and the forgotten Victorian language of flowers. Don’t become another rose in a field of roses. It just won’t stand out among the thousands of blogs and posts of the same old, same old.
  2. Oversell romance: We know it’s the season of rom-com, but overselling or sensationalizing the romance can’t be a big mistake. Besides, that’s what everyone else is doing, so why would you want to create the same thing as everyone else?
  3. Ignore singles: Although February 14th is typically a celebration of couples, a single population deserves to be celebrated. In fact, this time of year may be particularly difficult for single individuals dealing with loss, divorce, or a breakup. Don’t forget to cater to your single audience members as well.
  4. Neglect quality for quantity: Although you may be able to crank out 12 blog posts about love, be sure you aren’t sacrificing the readability of your content.

The Dos

Now let’s discuss what to do instead:

  1. Take a different angle:  Standing out from the crowd takes a measure of boldness and risk. While everyone else is always dow-eyed and smitten, don’t be afraid to take a different approach than the crowd. Instead of discussing the best states, tell a story of your worst Valentine’s Day. Instead of discussing all the good things about love, talk about how you can demonstrate love every day, not just on Valentine’s Day. Rather than flooding your blog with chocolate and hearts, tell you about the origins of Valentine’s Day or how it’s evolved over the years.
  2. Remember your audience: Just because it’s a holiday doesn’t mean your audience has changed. Remember needs, pain points, desires, and demographics as you create your holiday-centric content.
