Writing a 1500 Word Blog Post: Every. Single. Day.

Ah longform content, the bane of many marketing teams and yet the success of so many thriving online enterprises. We’ll outline how our professional content writers manage to churn out 1500 word blog posts that consistently rank highly for authoritative and SEO-rich content on our clients’ sites, day in and day out.

Writing Blog Post (Longform) Content: A to Z

Follow the exact format we’re running through with this blog post using the following:

Heading 1 – Write the title up front based on the information you have at hand. If the requester of said content gives you an acceptable headline, use it. Format this as Heading 1.

Outline – Jot down a quick list of paragraph headings and format as Heading 2 (H2). Think of common questions, good searchable terms. These headings are a great place to go ahead and use those keywords. If you have a list of keywords already, just copy and paste these over in the doc and make each a headline e.g. “what is the best xyz” , “advantages of using xyz”, “how do they make xyz”. You can quickly make sure you’ve hit all your keywords and then continue to sprinkle in the alphas throughout the piece.

Conclusion – The last heading 2 should be your “call to action” (CTA) paragraph. Almost always this is a link to contact us. Example – “Start Shopping Top Selling XYZs Now”, “Get Your Project Started”, “Schedule Your Consultation Now”

Conversely, ask a question and answer it with an action step – “Need a New XYZ? Let’s Get Started”

Write Alpha and Omega paragraphs – Now write the intro and conclusion paragraphs under H1 and the conclusion H2 respectively.

Turn on your word count – you should already be around 200 words. That leaves 1300 words or so divided between 4-5 sections that you just have to start filling in.

Pro Tips To Make Your Life Easier & Your Blog Posts Better:

  • Utilize bullet points to break up big paragraphs. If it looks more than 4 lines or so, you can chop it into two paragraphs wherever it makes sense. Bottom line, this needs to be quick and easy reading for internet readers.
  • If you fill in every section and still have a little bit of word count left, go back and expand sub-headers. Make shorter ones longer and start adding a sentence to the end of each paragraph.
  • Last resort is to look at a section you haven’t talked about on the subject and add a quick one paragraph section under a new H2. A section can quickly take up 100 words or more to get you over the 1500 word threshold.
  • Don’t think just write. Look at your source material and put it in your own words with actual factual backup. Link once or twice to an authoritative source like Wall Street Journal, Gov’t Sites (.gov), Forbes, Medical (Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Harvard Medical School), etc.
  • Once you hit the word count, now go back and fix typos, formatting. ALWAYS READ OVER WHAT YOU WROTE FROM START TO FINISH. Spell check definitely doesn’t catch everything. Pay careful attention to correct spelling of names of people and places.
  • Put a timer on your phone for 25 minutes. Be singularly focused and do nothing but write for 25 minutes straight. When time’s up, take a break. Go get a glass of water, walk outside, stretch, jumping jacks, etc. but keep it to about 5 mins so you don’t lose your groove. Come back quickly and do another 25 minute burst. You’ll find it may only take 2-3 bursts and you’ll have 1500 words done.
