Bizwrite Book Review: Agatha Christie An Autobiography

By: Jess Henley

As a writer, I love reading the autobiographies of other authors. Not only do these books provide insight into the author’s writing process, but I feel as though I discover how their mind works to put ink to paper. Recently, I enjoyed reading Agatha Christie’s autobiography, in which she discusses her long and successful career as a writer. Personally, I have always enjoyed a good mystery, and I have read several books by the “queen of mystery.” So I jumped at the chance to learn more about this fascinating literary icon.

Although her work and beloved characters are known around the world, little is known about the author herself. Her autobiography helps to unmask the mystery novelist and allows her readers to better understand her career and personal life. At Bizwrite, we hold to the idea that a good writer is a voracious reader, thus, let us read on into this fascinating behind the scenes.

Agatha Christie’s Writing Career

Dame Agatha Christie’s books may be among the most famous murder mysteries in the world. Her works have been adapted to countless plays, films, and other media over the last century. Many will recognize her most famous characters like Hercule Poirot. Mrs. Marple, and Arthur Hastings, but to name the entirety of her fictional characters would be a significant endeavor.

Over her prolific writing career and impressive portfolio, Dame Agatha Christie has authored over 66 detective novels, numerous short stories, countless poems, and several stage plays. As an avid author, Agatha Christie transformed the literary world forever.

Personal Life and Writing

One of the most fascinating aspects of her autobiography was learning about the personal life of the “queen of mystery.” She would often have her children read her novels to offer critiques and suggested edits. Several times, her daughter, Rosalind, would disapprove of her work and often told her to throw the whole thing out. Her first husband, Archibald Christie, would encourage and support Agatha to continue writing.

Her autobiography tells her readers that being a professional author can be challenging. In fact, she mentions several times when she considered ending her career as an author and never looking back. Thankfully, the mystery writer always came back to writing and would continue until the end of her life.

On Her Autobiography

Fans of the mystery author will enjoy getting an inside look into the mind and inner thoughts of the brilliant writer. As she discusses her humble beginnings in writing poetry and her illustrious writing career,  Agatha Christie’s autobiography explores the creation of her beloved characters and the inspiration behind them. As a writer, Agatha Christie’s biography is a masterclass in telling a life story and the act of writing. Her work continues to inspire, mystify, and delight her readers. In short, Agatha Christie: An Autobiography (available on Amazon and wherever fine writing is sold) is highly recommended by the team here at Bizwrite.
